These special terms are used to describe flags and their usage:
Canton
The canton strictly refers to any
quarter of the flag, but it commonly means the upper quarter nearest
the staff. This is considered to be the point of highest honour on a
flag.
Charge
Any emblem placed on the field or added
to the basic design of the flag.
Field
The basic area or background color of
the flag.
Fly
The part of the flag furthest form the
staff; the part that flies in the wind.
Hoist
The part of the flag closest to the
staff; the part used to hoist or raise the flag.
